Day 68: Share What You’ve Learned

I waddled over the elevator on the eighth floor of the Empire Hotel with a huge, heavy gym bag on one hip and my cane on the other side. When I got to the elevator bay, a woman standing there glanced over at me with a concerned look on her face. Then, her eyes traveled behind me to a man struggling to walk as he wheeled a bag.

After we exchanged morning pleasantries, the man grab the woman’s hand and looked me up and down.

“I hurt my legs skiing,” he said. “Actually someone crashed into me from behind.”

“That’s terrible,” I replied. “I wish my story was as exciting.”

“What happened to you?”

“Oh I have an autoimmune condition sort of like MS.”

“You said like. What is it exactly?”

“People don’t usually know what it is when I say it.”

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to know,” he said as we stepped into the elevator.

“Igg4 related disease.”

“So is it chronic and degenerative?”

“Yes it is. It caused inflammation in joints and organs throughout the body. A couple of years ago this damaged nerves in my spine. I’ve had procedures to reduce the pain.”

An older woman in the elevator chimed in, “I had three tumors taken out my spine. I still have terrible pain. What procedure is this and where did you get it?”

“It’s radio frequency ablation. I got it, steroid injections and epidurals done at the hospital for special surgery.”

“That’s fantastic,” the man said. “I hope I can move better after Achilles surgery.”

“Oh no,” I said as we exited the elevator. “A co-worked had that procedure and couldn’t walk for a while. Good luck.”

“It’s been great to meet you,” he replied as we started to exit the hotel. “You have a great attitude. You’re still smiling; that’s amazing”

“Thank you. I smile. I cry but I keep going,” I replied as I trudge to the snow to work.
