I was a brownie and then a Girl Scout when I was in Elementary School and I took my oath seriously.
“On my honor, I will try to serve God and my country. To help people at all times and to live by the Girl Scout law.” Those words were burned in my brain. So, I tried to join the military in college but my allergies and other medical problems prevented me from serving. Instead, I volunteered my time every Saturday to tutor underprivileged kids. And, I served God. I sang in choir for four years in addition to attending church.
Afterwards, I continued to volunteer my time. Also, I made an effort to buy Girl Scout cookies any time I learned a coworker’s child or friend’s child was selling them. This year was no exception. I bought boxes from five kids, including my coworkers Kristin’s daughter. Some I sent to the Troops. Others I gave to fellow coworkers. The one I got from Kristin’s daughter I wanted donated to a food bank.
On Super Tuesday I came back from lunch and there was a package from Kristin in my desk. Inside was a box of thin mints and a note.
It said, “You inspired me to donate one of our boxes. Someone of your kindness deserves her thin mints.” Her note touched my soul and brightened my day. ; It made me grateful that one small gesture meant something to her.
I gave away the box of cookies she sent me. I enjoyed passing the smile Kristin gave me on to someone else.
