Present A United Front

Okay, I have to admit that after the late 80’s or early 90’s rap wasn’t my music of choice. So, when I watched the Super Bowl earlier this year I knew the name Kendrick Lamar but I didn’t know a lot of his music except for “The Blacker The Berry.” Then, I heard, “They Not Like Us.” Honestly, at the time I didn’t catch the lyrics but the phrase stuck with me.

“They Not Like Us,” has turned into a phrase or idea used by many to separate us in these  times. It’s used to point out real and fabricated differences. I’m guilty of this too when I refer to other generations. I say things like “they don’t have our work ethic, basic manners or sense of accountability.” I’m aware it’s not fair to categorize entire groups of people by the actions of a few.

I can say I didn’t like it when my aunt Rubelle (Lola) whose birthday would’ve been today, used to say in my day you kids would have your lip pulled for talking back adults or answering with what when asked a question.

So when I saw my day 16 Christmas countdown sweater, I liked it because it showed all different characters associated with Christmas together presenting a united front.
