If you were accused of something, you’d like the benefit of the doubt, wouldn’t you? I know I would. Too often allegations alone are enough to ruin someone’s life. The mere suggestion of a crime or inappropriate behavior is enough for people to draw a conclusion rather than looking at all of the facts. Often, even if someone is vindicated in court, the allegations remain a part of their story going forward. The acquittal frequently gets less attention than the accusations.
If someone is found guilty in a court of law, I am frequently disturbed to learn that other people were aware of the wrongdoing and said nothing, did nothing or enabled the criminal behavior. I would like to think that if I were in a position to protect someone else from harm I would regardless of the personal cost. However, I’m aware that until I’m tested I don’t know my true response. But, I believe that if you see something, say something.
I suppose the best that any of us can hope for when we find ourselves being judged or facing accusations that this Sojourner Truth quote is true regardless of our race, wealth and : “I feel safe even in the midst of my enemies; for the truth is powerful and will prevail.”
